In the Disney film "Invincible", Vince Papale, played by Mark Wahlberg, is the main character. After his story was covered on ESPN, Hollywood saw it and began developing a movie about his brief time as an Eagle.
At age 30, Papale joined the Eagles and became the oldest rookie non-kicker in league history to compete without having played collegiate football. From 1976 to 1978, he played wide receiver and special teams for the Eagles.
A shoulder injury caused his career to end suddenly in 1978. Before opting to work as a commercial mortgage banker, he worked as a radio and television announcer for eight years after retiring from the NFL.
Papale starred for the Philadelphia Bell before joining the Eagles. In his first year with the Bell, Papale caught nine balls for 121 yards. He recorded an average of 13.4 yards per reception, including the first pass caught in the new league's history. Papale also excelled on special teams during both seasons with the organization.
In 2001, Papale was identified as having colorectal cancer. He overcame the sickness and made a complete recovery. He later served as a spokesman, advising people to get tested for the disease and to have regular checkups. He also made appearances in advertisements for Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
