The game follows the story of Arthur Morgan, an outlaw of the Van der Linde gang who struggle to survive as they become embroiled in conflict with government forces, rival gangs, and other enemies as the glory days of the Wild West begin to fade.
Red Dead Redemption 2 also features a multiplayer component in Red Dead Online, a separate game mode released on November 27, 2018, for Playstaiton 4 and Xbox One. Red Dead Online takes cues from Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto Online multiplayer from Grand Theft Auto V with features such as a character creator and microtransactions for in-game currency.

Although originally penned for release in the second half of 2017, it got delayed until the first half of 2018, and then again to its eventual release date of October 26, 2018.
