Dan received his formal education from Lindenhurst Senior High School. He graduated from there in 1965 and after his graduation, he served there as their physical education teacher. He joined US Marine Corps in the early 1970s and worked there for about three years. While he was in US Marines, he toured in Vietnam as a Vietnam War veteran. He also got enrolled at Southern Connecticut State University. While he was there he became more interested in acting. He has been active in acting since 1981. His breakthrough role as an actor came in 1988 after he began starring the role of Jack Arnold in the TV series The Wonder Years.
